Technical symbols and signs
EXPLANATIONS OF SIGNS AND SYMBOLS
Many people no doubt often wonder what the symbols and sometimes cryptic instructions on our packaging actually mean. To help with this, we have compiled a short glossary explaining the most important signs and symbols.
Some are universal and standardised, meaning that every manufacturer and retailer must use the same symbol. Others, however, are open to interpretation and can be represented however the manufacturer chooses.
TECHNICAL MARKINGS AND SYMBOLS ON OUR PACKAGING
THE DIMMABILITY SYMBOLS:
- This LED light source is NOT dimmable
- The LED light source is dimmable (we regularly test compatible dimmer types for you – you can view and download these here in the current dimmer list)
- SEGULA Ambient Dimming light sources – meaning that when dimming, not only does the brightness change but also the color of light!
LIGHT SOURCE BEHAVIOUR:
- The time taken from switching on the light source until it reaches 60% brightness
- The time from switching on the light source until it reaches 100% brightness
- The wattage equivalent of an LED compared to a conventional incandescent bulb
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:
- The beam angle – this can vary considerably depending on the design of the light source
- The colour temperature scale – this indicates the color temperature of the light source. For Ambient Dimming LED light sources, a range is specified.
CERTIFICATES AND MARKINGS:
- CE – general: A declaration by retailers and manufacturers that the products comply with EU laws and directives.
- SEGULA Original: Products bearing this stamp are light sources featuring patented soft filament technology.
- Please always refer to the operating instructions before fitting or installing a lamp.
WARNINGS:
- Do not use the light source in enclosed lamps
- Do not touch broken light sources – risk of injury
- Protect the light source from moisture – not suitable for outdoor use
ENVIRONMENTAL SYMBOLS:
- Electrical waste: this light source must not be disposed of with household waste. It must be taken to an electrical waste collection point or a recycling centre.
- The recycling code indicates the material from which the packaging is made and thus defines the recycling loop into which it is returned.
- Recycling code ‘20’ for corrugated
cardboard - Recycling code ‘21’ for solid board
THE EU ENERGY LABEL:
The EU energy label must be displayed on all LED packaging sold within the EU.
In 2021, there was a fundamental change to the EU regulations governing the energy label.
In addition to the signs and symbols, there is of course further information on LED packaging, such as the lumen values, the socket type, the size, shape and so on, all of which provide details about the LED light sources. You can find these terms and their meanings here, for example.
