Not all glass is the same – so far, so good. But why borosilicate glass? Why do we at SEGULA use this particular type of glass to manufacture our LED light sources, rather than just any conventional glass?
Here we present 5 facts about borosilicate glass and why it is the perfect material for us!
1. STRENGTH AND WEIGHT
Borosilicate glass is extremely light! Yet it is still very robust and stable. This combination of strength and low weight makes it ideal for manufacturing glass bulbs for LED light sources. The low weight is particularly beneficial when it comes to large glass bulbs!

2. HEAT RESISTANCE
The glass is highly heat-resistant, meaning it has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion. It does not crack when exposed to high heat or significant temperature fluctuations. Admittedly, LED light sources do not get as hot as conventional incandescent bulbs, yet heat resistance is a huge safety advantage. This is particularly important in glass processing and also in the manufacture of glass bulbs.
3. CHEMICAL RESISTANCE OF BOROSILICATE GLASS
The high boron content of this special glass makes it not only impact- and heat-resistant, but also resistant to most chemicals. Borosilicate glass is therefore often used for laboratory equipment. In the case of light sources, whose bulbs are partially filled with gases for cooling, this material has proved extremely advantageous. It does not tarnish, remains clear and free from impurities and marks – after all, who would like it if the TV suddenly switched off during a Netflix or gaming night?!
4. NO HARMFUL SUBSTANCES OR TOXINS
Borosilicate glass contains no toxins or substances that are harmful to health. It is therefore completely safe for humans. Furthermore, the material is completely odourless and tasteless. It is therefore very commonly used in the food industry – for drinking bottles, storage containers, jars and much more!
5. THE SUSTAINABILITY OF BOROSILICATE GLASS
Borosilicate glass is fully recyclable and reusable after melting, unlike many other glass mixtures. Thanks to its durability, it is not only particularly long-lasting but also reusable should it ever reach the end of its useful life or break.
