LED BASES – A BRIEF EXPLANATION

Switching to LED lighting – just don’t lose your head

All LED light sources can be categorised into different classes based on their base. LED bases are standardised, making it very easy to switch from incandescent bulbs, halogen spotlights or energy-saving light sources to LED lighting.

With SEGULA LED bases, loose contacts and flickering lights are a thing of the past. High-quality materials and a secure fit ensure reliability and, above all, safety. We certainly don’t want the light to fall on your head!

Not sure which base is the right one for the socket at home? A ruler will do the trick. Simply measure the distance between the pins or the diameter of the base. The number in the base designation usually specifies exactly these dimensions. This gives you a rough idea of what you need. That’s why, in the SEGULA Online Shop, we’ve categorised all LED light sources by base type, so you can find what you’re looking for at a glance.

LED base classes

EDISON LED BASE (E10, E14, E27)

The classic. These screw-in bases date back to Thomas Alva Edison and are named after him. They are the most common bases for domestic use. In the Segula range, you can even deduce the color of light from the base color. Gold bases – warmer color of light 2200 Kelvin; silver bases – cooler color of light from 2700 Kelvin upwards.

SOCKET BASES

Sleeve bases are known as S14d and S14s. We are most familiar with these from linear lamps, which are becoming increasingly popular. Sleeve bases can be made of plastic or metal, depending on your preference.

S14d always means one base per light source, whilst S14s always has two bases. Easy to remember. Long linear lamps often have two bases, simply for stability.

PIN BASE

Pin bases come in the widest variety of models and types. They are commonly found in pins, spotlights and stick lamps. G4, GU 5.3, G 6.35 and G9 are the most common designations.

BAYONET AND R7S

It wouldn’t be right if there weren’t a few holdouts. In this case, the extras include the GU10 bayonet socket and the R7s socket. GU10 is mainly found in spotlights, and R7s in slim tubular lamps with two terminals.
